Anacortes

Recently we traveled to Anacortes, WA with an intention: to consume the Bigfoot doughnut from Donut House. Verdict? Absolutely delicious and extremely filling. Seriously, you could probably split one between two people, but we ended up trying both maple and chocolate.

That was the first of a few stops as we next headed to Penguin Coffee. I ordered the Iced Americano. Also yum. The barista there was super friendly and gave us suggestions for places we could visit while in town. She mentioned Cap Sante Park, which we hadn’t planned on going to, but sometimes the best memories are made from the unexpected additions to your trip. So we drove our tiny car (Honda Fit) up a narrow and winding mountainside, reaching a parking lot at the top. You get out of your car and the view is right there, no hiking required. They even have a few benches to relax and take in the scenery. It’s a gorgeous overlook where you can see the City of Anacortes and much more.

Our next stop was Rosario Beach to see The Maiden of Deception Pass, or Ko-kwal-alwoot, who watches over the Samish people of the area. Standing around 5ft tall, double sided, she is intricately carved from a cedar log taken from Mount Baker. More information of Ko-kwal-alwoot is located on several plaques nearby.

Around Ko-kwal-alwoot are two walking paths that take you past the ocean and eventually connect. Rosario Beach itself is small but beautiful and a great place for collecting rocks and sea glass. It was quite easy to find a small piece of sea glass in fact.

There are many more places in Anacortes, so I encourage getting out there to find your own adventures!
