Looking for a fun new hobby? Try spreading some kindness by painting rocks and hiding them for others to find! People often inscribe an uplifting message or paint a calming scene, but it can be whatever you want. Don’t forget to write “Keep” or “Re-hide” on the back; it gives the finder an option to take it home or hide it again for someone else to find.
Wondering where to start or what supplies you’ll need? Begin by picking out a rock of your liking, usually a smooth stone is good. Clean it up a little with soap and water and allow to dry. You can also purchase rocks from craft stores as another option. Acrylic paint is recommended for your design and can either be applied by using a regular paintbrush or with paint pens. Let your design completely dry before the final step of adding either Mod Podge or a spray-on sealer. Just make sure it’s a waterproof sealer so your design stays intact from the elements.
Where can you hide a painted rock? Near plants or in trees, around town, a neighborhood or playground, slightly out of view or in plain sight. Be mindful though, not everyone will appreciate a painted rock in their yard. It is also illegal to place them in State and National Parks as they are considered trash.
You can also connect with local painted rock communities online, typically Facebook. There you can post your findings, update on your painting progress, or even give clues to where you might hide your next rock.
Enjoy, the possibilities are as limitless as your imagination!
