Designed by Nancy Holt and built by Al Poynter from 1977-1978, this beautiful piece of architecture sits on the Western Washington University campus with the arches aligned to the North Star. The sculpture is 10′ high with an outer ring diameter of 40′ and an inner ring of 20′. Made of rock, or Brown Mountain Stone, from the side of Red Mountain (Lillooet Mountain Range). The structure bears the resemblance and mystery of Stonehenge, allowing the viewer to feel wonder and a connection with the natural world. Holt states of her work, “even when we think in celestial terms, there is still indefiniteness.”
