The Red Dress

This week we got to see something incredible—The Red Dress. A project created by British artist Kirstie Macleod, The Red Dress provides an artistic outlet for individuals to tell their stories through embroidery. 380 embroiderers from 51 countries worked on sections of the dress which was later constructed after 14 years of loving labor. Built out of 87 panels of burgundy silk dupion, weighing a little over 14 lbs, and covered with an estimated 1-1.5 billion stitches. Initially the dress was conceived to unite people around the world through embroidery. However, it developed further into a means of self-expression for the artists as they were encouraged to make work that represented them or their culture and traditions. As noted from their website, the dress will be traveling to many different galleries, museums and event spaces around the world with the aim to be accessible to all. Currently on exhibit at the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum in La Conner, WA, from January 8th-March 2nd, 2025. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this gorgeous work of art!
